The Military Academy Incident was a failed '' Coup D'état '' attempt that took place in Japan in 1934 . It was one of a sequence of Imperial Japanese Forces conspiracies for a ' Shōwa Restoration '. The military had already gained independence from government control, answering only to the Emperor . Now, military leaders set their goal on taking control of the weakened government. The political agenda was a Militarist , Right-wing , " Socialist " revolution, against political corruption. The revolution was also anti-" Capitalist ", to take control of the economy for the war efforts. Leaders of the coup were five Military Academy cadets, who made the acquaintance of two officers, Muranaka and Isobe , leaders of the militarist '' Kodaha '' faction at the academy, covertly advised by Sadao Araki , its principal leader. In early November 1934, Sato, one of the cadets, informed the government about the ''Kodaha'' movement and its plans for a coup d'état. Forewarned, Captain Masanobu Tsuji , company commander at the Military Academy, arranged the arrest of the principals by the Gendarmerie on November 20 . For lack of evidence, the accused could not be convicted; but the five cadets were expelled from the Academy in March 1935, and Muranaka and Isobe were suspended from duty in April 1935. The "Kodoha" group believed that Sato was a spy for Captain Masanobu Tsuji, and that the whole affair was a trap laid by Tsuji, Major Kitamura , and Gendarmerie Captain Tsukamoto . When the suspended Muranaka and Isobe later distributed pamphlets entitled "Remonstrance for the Restoration of Military Discipline" (otherwise known as "Views on the Housecleaning of the Army"), they were dismissed from the service outright in August 1935. The "Military Academy Incident" (sometimes termed the "November Incident") was among the factors that led to the February 26 Incident affair. Similar attempts were the February 26 Incident , Imperial Colors Incident and May 15 Incident . |
