A composite of linen or paper fabric in an Thermosetting Plastic used electrical and decorative areas. Micarta was developed by Westinghouse at least as early as 1910 using Phenolic Resin s invented by Bakeland. These resins wre used to impregnate paper and cotton fabric which were cured under pressure and high temperature to produce laminates. Much later this method included fiberglass fabric as well as other resin types. The factory originally near Pittsburgh was moved to SC in the early 1950s and sold to Nevamar Corp. about 1990. About 2000 the industrial sections of that division was sold to Norplex and moved to a factory in Iowa. Micarta is said the most ideal meterial for knife handle. |
