The Mexican Bandits is a punk/ska band, from the working class city of Oshawa Ontario . Consisting of three members known only by their aliais Talco (lead vocals), Tablo (guitar), and Pacho (drums), the Bandit’s short lived career was full of controversy and notoriety. The band was formed in the basement of band member Tablo with Talco. The band was never fully together, and only lasted during two songwriting sessions in the winter of 2004. The band style could be described as The Offspring meets Anti-Flag meets Sublime. The band mixes aggressive guitars, pounding drums and humorous and thought provoking lyrics. The bands sense of humor is heavily centered on pop culture influences, for example Drew Carey is mentioned in several songs. Despite never officially making any public appearances, the band quickly gained a loyal, local following. THE FEBRUARY SESSION The first of the bands only two sessions was in February of 2004. Members Talco and Tablo met in Tablo's basement to write entertaining music. This session lasted for one week, in which the majority of the bands songs were written. The songs included; Mexican Bandits, The Melody of Lost Souls, A Walk in the Desert (heavy metal mix), Self Denial, and The Seriousness of being Tom. The lyrics were all written by Talco, and the guitar work was written by Tablo; unfortunately Pacho was not present during this session. The bands ability to write songs at such a high speed, made many wonder that it was only a matter of time before the band would find commercial success. THE MARCH SESSION The second and final session was in March of 2004. Members Pacho and Tablo were present. Since lyricist Talco was not present only music was written for the new songs. This session was not as eventful as the February Sessions, however this led to the motto of the band “Tacho’s for Paco”. SONG DESCRIPTION The Seriousness of being Tom The song is about a suicidal teenager and his water gun. A sample line “I point it in my mouth, will it ever take my pain away” The Melody of Lost Souls The most infamous of all the Bandits songs, the song is a random collection of pop culture references. Topics covered include Tommy Lee, Drew Carey, the Drew Carey Show, the band Anti Flag. Famous lines include “Sorry Drew Carey, you don’t have cancer, your just tiered now form all the hugs”. “1234 I hate the government and the government hates me”. Mexican Bandits The second most infamous song in the Bandits catalog. The song is about a man in Mexico living in poverty. The man tries to fend for his family, but all he sees around him is drug dealers, murder, and corruption. A sample line from the song “Mexico, Mexico, not a place I’d like to go, but Sanchez wants to know why his kids can’t go to school”. Despite the song’s serious subject matter the bands sense of humor clearly shines through with references to South Park, and Pornography. A Walk in the Desert The most unpopular of the Bandit’s songs, it is a homage to heavy metal of the 80s. A sample line “Vultures run away to return another day, run away I’vee no place for me to stay.” Self Denial The songs subject matter focuses on a teenager lusting after the character Kate O’Brian of the Drew Carey Show. The song’s title is a reference to The Offspring’s song “Self Esteem”. A sample line is “So what if your on the Drew Carey show, not something that I need to know.”. BREAKUP/REUNION RUMORS The band disbanded after the March Session, due to a lack of commintment. There have been reunion rumors, however members of the band have denied any possibility of a reunion. |
