Metro Cinema is a famous cinema in Bombay , India . The Metro Goldwyn Corporation acquired the land for a lease of Re 1 annually for 999 years. The main architect of the cinema was Thomas W. Lamb of New York , and D. W. Ditchburn of Bombay was the associate architect. It is located in the Dhobitalao area. The Art Deco cinema opened on June 8 , 1938 , and initially exhibited movies made by MGM. The interior, floors, walls, ceilings as well as the furniture, was in shades of red and pink. The marble foyer and staircases led up to murals executed by students of the J. J. School Of Arts , under the director Charles Gerard . Among the famous invitees was Gregory Peck . In the mid- 1980s , the cinema started showing Hindi films. In 2004, the cinema closed down, and is currently being renovated to accommodate a multiplex cinema. |
