Metal Gear Timeline Compared To Reality

This article compares events in the timeline of the Metal Gear Series Of Videogames to the real-life events which they incorporate, up to the year 2000.

''1960's''
At the point of (1964) many real events and persons from the era (i.e. the early stages of the Vietnam War , President John F. Kennedy 's Assassination, American President Lyndon B. Johnson , Russian President Nikita Kruschev , the Cuban Missile Crisis , the failed Bay Of Pigs Invasion ) are mentioned (and even have importance in the Plot, albeit often coupled with fictional events and conspiracy theories). Another real event was the infiltratration of Tselinoyarsk by a US CIA agent to rescue a Soviet rocket scientist who was defecting. At the same time, another US agent defected to the Soviet Union. In the game, these events are fictionalized, with those roles being played by Naked Snake and The Boss . This suggests that, apart from the in game events, the timeline was almost entirely parallel to reality at this point.

''1990's''
In the first two games in the series, , which are set in the early 1990's (but made in the late 1980's) several fictional countries ( Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land are featured but no reference is made to world leaders (apart from a mention that the American President used an assassination squad at times). However Metal Gear Solid (set in 2005 and made in the mid to late 1990's) makes references to real events of the 1980's and 90's (the Gulf War , the Chernobyl incident) but no reference to the world leaders of that era. This would suggest that, up until the late 90's/early 21st century, the series' history still followed a path generally the same as our own.

''21st Century''
It is in the 21st century that the series drastically branches from reality. It is not known when the branch occurs but it has occurred by the year 2005. In , which is set around the years 2007 and 2009) that the differences to reality are explored. Two fictional US Presidents are both named and feature (George Sears AKA Solidus Snake , who was the President at the time of MGS and resigned thereafter; and James Johnson his succesor). This suggests that, in the Metal Gear reality, elections went the same as in our reality until some point around 2001-4 when different (fictional) candidates began winning the elections.

''What's next?''
The next Metal Gear Game () is believed to have an even more futuristic setting. Plot and timeline development remains so far unknown.
