GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 70.9 Km&2 (27.4 Mi&2 ). 69.2 km&2 (26.7 mi&2) of it is land and 1.7 km&2 (0.7 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 2.41% water. Islands in Mercer, Maine Bowden Island Konoff Island (Once known as Yeaton Island) Farrand Island DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 647 people, 256 households, and 178 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 9.4/km&2 (24.2/mi&2). There were 366 housing units at an average density of 5.3/km&2 (13.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.06% White , 0.15% African American , 0.31% Native American , 1.39% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.62% from Other Races , and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 256 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were Married Couples living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.94. In the town the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 30.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 years of age or older.
