The Romans invaded mainly from Gaul, although they were from Rome. From Gaul they invaded the southern coast of Britain. Between 55 and 54 BC Caesar attacked with 12,000 men to punish Britain for helping the Gauls. In AD 43 Claudius invaded Britain with 40,000 troops looking for slaves and the rich minerals that were in Britain’s soil. The Saxons came from Northern Germany, Denmark, and Holland. They invaded the East and south coasts of Britain many times between AD 450 and 650 for farming land, fresh water, and more land for people to live on. The Vikings came from Norway and Scandinavia. They attacked the north-east coast of Britain. They invaded in AD 793 and then later in AD 1000-1060. They did this because they had problems with overpopulation, they needed more farming land, and they also came to loot and rape. The Christians originally came from Italy but they settled in Ireland. They invaded from the north in the AD 600s. Their aim was to make religious conversions. |
