''Meat Puppets'' is the self-titled debut by the Meat Puppets . The album is unlike any of their later, and more well-known, releases due to its Hardcore Punk sound; many of the songs are like short blasts of noise with nonsensical lyrics than actual songs with melodies. Nonetheless, the inclusion of the country covers "Walking Boss" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," indicated that the band's musical taste and ability stretched beyond the hardcore genre. It was recorded very quickly and hastily in a matter of days, there are very few overdubs and many of the takes were first takes. The sound quality is not the greatest, there is noticeable fuzz in the background of the music. The band opted for this because they wanted to basically play live with only a few microphones. The 1999 Rykodisc reissue features the "In A Car" EP as well as 18 bonus tracks, many of them studio jams or outtakes. The booklet also has a review by friend of the band Gregg Turkington and recording notes by drummer Derrick Bostrom . It is often overshadowed by the greatness of their second album, '' Meat Puppets II '', but some reviewers say that this album is brilliant in its own right, perhaps because it wasn't like any music being recorded at the time or since.
