The series was the 0-10 Network's attempt to come up with a police show to rival '' Homicide '' (shown by the Seven Network ) and '' Division 4 '' (shown by the Nine Network ). ''Matlock Police'' was different from its predecessors was that it was set in a small country town in the state of Victoria . The first episode was broadcast in Melbourne 22 February 1971. The series was in black and white, before switching to colour with episode 200. The series was cancelled in 1975 after a total of 228 episode had been produced. The series focused on the police station and crime in the small town of Matlock. Also explored was the backgrounds and personal lives of the main policemen, who initially were Sgt Bert Kennedy who was in charge of the station and who had been at the station seven years; Detective Allan Curtis, a city boy who resented his country posting; Detective Sergeant Vic Maddern from Melbourne who had done a spell in the army and fought in the Korean War; and Constable Gary Hogan, youngest of the four main characters, a highway patrolman. After the series ended the character of Gary Hogan was Spun-off into new series '' Solo One '' which lasted one season. REGULAR CAST Det. Sgt. Vic Maddern - Michael Pate Sen. Det.
