Built in 1940 during World War II despite shortages in steel and other supplies, Mason Temple was the largest church building owned by a predominantly black religious denomination in the United States at the time of its completion. Mason Temple has been the site of several historic events of note, one of which was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 's ''Mountain Top'' speech. The building was named for Bishop C. H. Mason, founder of the Church of God in Christ, who is entombed in a marble crypt inside the Temple. The Temple has a seating capacity of over 5,000 and is located in Memphis, Tennessee . |
