Maryland Championship Wrestling is a regional independent wrestling federation that bases most of its cards in Maryland, but has held cards in all neighboring states as well. Its first card was held on July 19 , 1998 , at the Patapsco Arena in Baltimore, Maryland .

MCW held a six man match on July 19 , 1998 in Baltimore, Maryland to crown the first ever Light Heavyweight Champion. The winner of the match was Shane Shamrock and due to his untimely passing, MCW named him as the lifetime Light Heavyweight Champion. Thus the Cruiserweight Championship was born.

Operations ceased in 2003 as the national popularity of wrestling declined, but owner Dan McDevitt , after holding occasional cards only at Fort Meade in the interim, has announced that MCW will return to regular action as of February 26 , 2006 .
