A Martial Race is a designation created by officials of British India to describe "races" (peoples) that were thought to be naturally warlike. Martial races were thought to possess qualities like courage, loyalty, self-sufficiency, physical strength and resilience, orderliness and hard work, and fighting tenacity. The British recruited heavily from these Martial Races for service in the colonial military. Some of the peoples designated by the British as belonging to a martial race are the Gurkha s, Rajput s , Jat s, ( Muslim , Sikh & Hindu ) Pashtun s (Pathans), Maratha s, Mahar s, and Kodava s. |
