Marshall County is a County located in the State of Illinois . As of 2000 , the population is 13,180. Its County Seat is Lacon, Illinois 6 .


GEOGRAPHY

According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 1,032 Km&2 (399 Mi&2 ). 1,000 km&2 (386 mi&2) of it is land and 32 km&2 (12 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 3.12% water.


HISTORY

Marshall County was formed in 1839 out of Putnam County . It was named in honor of John Marshall , Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court , who died in 1835.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 13,180 people, 5,225 households, and 3,720 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 13/km&2 (34/mi&2). There were 5,914 housing units at an average density of 6/km&2 (15/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 98.19% White , 0.35% Black or African American , 0.22% Native American , 0.25% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.25% from Other Races , and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 5,225 households out of which 29.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.80% were Married Couples living together, 6.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% were non-families. 25.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the county the population was spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 18.80% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $41,576, and the median income for a family was $48,061. Males had a median income of $35,765 versus $21,452 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $19,065. 5.60% of the population and 3.80% of families were below the Poverty Line . 6.90% of those under the age of 18 and 5.40% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
