Wythe's notable students included Jefferson ; James Monroe ; Henry Clay ; the Law School's other Namesake , John Marshall , who became Chief Justice Of The United States in 1801; and St. George Tucker , who succeeded Wythe as Professor of Law at William and Mary, and edited the seminal early American edition of Blackstone's Commentaries . The Law School's well-regarded faculty includes figures such as William Van Alstyne , Davison M. Douglas and Alan J. Meese . The school offers programs such as the Institute Of Bill Of Rights Law , the newly established Election Law Program , and a widely-emulated Legal Skills curriculum for first and second-year students. As a public school, William and Mary charges relatively low tuition, and has generally been listed in the top 30 in the nation in the U.S. News & World Report Rankings of American Law Schools; it was ranked 27th in the 2007 ranking.
