Marine Corps Martial Arts Program

The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) is a system developed by the United States Marine Corps to combine existing and new hand to hand and close combat techniques with morale and team-building functions and instruction in what the Marine Corps calls the "Warrior Ethos." The program, which began in 2001 , trains Marines (and US Navy personnel attached to Marine Units) in unarmed combat, edged weapons, weapons of opportunity and Rifle and Bayonet techniques.

UNARMED COMBAT

The underlying unarmed combat system is combination of a claimed ten traditional Martial Art s, as well as the Marine Corps' existing close combat system, the LINE System (Linear Infighting Neurological Overriding Engagement). The LINE System, developed in the early 1980 s, was found to be lacking in flexibility and techniques for use in situations that did not require deadly force, such as Peacekeeping operations.

BELT SYSTEM

The Program uses an advancement system of colored belts similar to that of most martial arts. The initial "tan belt" course is approximately thirty hours long, with the order of progression being, from lowest to highest: tan, grey, green, brown, black. Because the belts are worn with the Marine's Camouflage utility uniform, the complete range of belt colors such as red, yellow or purple are excluded as a practical consideration. MCMAP instructors' belts are green, brown, or black and have one or multiple band(s) of a different color running perpendicular to the belt to signify instructor status.
