She was a daughter of Philipp Wilhelm, Elector Palatine and Elizabeth Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt . Her maternal grandparents were George II, Landgrave Of Hesse-Darmstadt and Sofie Eleonore of Saxony. Sofie Eleonore was in turn a daughter of John George I, Elector Of Saxony .

Marie Louise Of Orleans , the first wife of Charles II Of Spain , had died childless. Maria Anna was chosen out of the many candidates to become his second wife because her ancestors had been very fertile, and they married in 1690 . However they also had no children, in all probability not because she was infertile herself but because of the king's medical problems.

She supported the Austria n party during her time as queen. She died in Guadalajara, Spain .
