19th Century

1880 – The first Southern Pacific Railroad train reaches Tucson, Arizona .

1880 – The Miami Valley Railway , in Ohio , is sold from receivership to the Toledo, Delphos And Burlington railway.

1896 – The Grand Trunk Railway purchases the Central Vermont Railway and begins operating it as a wholly-owned subsidiary.

20th Century

1904 – The Southern Pacific Railroad completes the Coast Line between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California .

1949 – The Chicago, Burlington And Quincy Railroad , Denver And Rio Grande Western Railroad and Western Pacific Railroad jointly launch the '' California Zephyr '' between Chicago, Illinois , and San Francisco, California , as the first train to include Vista Dome Cars in regular service.

1960 – The '' Pioneer Zephyr '' trainset makes its final revenue run on a trip from Lincoln, Nebraska , to Kansas City, Missouri . It then continues through Galesburg, Illinois to Chicago, Illinois in preparation for its final disposition.
