The film, set during World War II , is about the life of a Canadian Eskimo boy, Avik (played by Jason Scott Lee ), who joins the Royal Canadian Air Force and eventually, as a crewmember of a Lancaster Bomber , participates in the famous firebombing of Dresden . Throughout his life, he is haunted by love for a half-Métis girl, Albertine (played by Anne Parillaud ). The film was an Australian-French-Canadian co-production and also stars Patrick Bergin playing a very pivotal role in the film as both surrogate father and primary rival. Jeanne Moreau also has a minor role as a Québécois nun. John Cusack makes a small but important role as a "Mapmaker" who is told an incredible tale. The script was written by Australian author Louis Nowra , based on a 10-page treatment by Ward. It has been rumored that Ward took the money he made from directing Aliens 3 and used it to finance the film (Map of The Human Heart). |
