Information About

Manufacturing Execution Systems

The goals of an MES system include:

# Initiate production activities
# Guide production activities
# Collect production-related information from
## Automated production equipment
## Sensors
## Personnel
## Software systems
# Monitor and control quality parameters
# Provide information to personnel and machines necessary to perform production activities
# Facilitate communication inside the production facility among personnel and machines
# Facilitate communication beyond the facility to suppliers, customers, engineers, sales, and management
# Respond to changes in
## Demand for manufactured goods
## Supply of components necessary for production
## Product specification (engineering changes)
## Availability of resources including personnel and equipment
# Ensure compliance with applicable law, such as mandates by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Defense (DOD)

Benefits associated with MES implementations include:

# Reducing manufacturing cycle times
# Improved visibility and tracking of production, Real-time
# Improved traceability and genealogy of produced goods
# Improved quality and reduced defects
# Improved return on Assets
# Improving Gross Margin s and Cash Flow
# Improving Turn-around-times (TATs)
# Integrating with ERP and existing processes
# Reduced safety stock (inventory)
# Improved inventory turnover

The ISA has defined standards regarding the structuring of MES and its integration in a larger company-wide IT architecture independent of a particular solution vendor. ISA S95 "Enterprise-Control System Integration" defines a layer model looking at the integration aspects between ERP, MES and the production control level. It is supported by several vendors in the MES area. ISA S88 "General and Site Recipe Models and Representation" defines a process state model for the batch industry.

COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS

Apriso FlexNet Production

Apriso FlexNet Production is an Adaptive manufacturing execution system, providing oraganizations the ability to adapt to rapid organizational changes such as product introductions, supply chain re-organizations, new or updated mandates, equipment and personnel changes, process reengineering, and others.

Apriso FlexNet suite is an integrated solution for Production (MES), Warehousing ( WMS ), Time, Labor, Quality, Maintenance and Visibility. The system is built using Microsoft .NET technology with a web-based interface.

Eyelit Manufacturing

The Eyelit MES eyelit Manufacturing™ is a 'next generation' MES that is written in the JAVA™ which means it can run on many operating systems including Windows, LINUX and UNIX. The MES is modular and includes fully featured components that manage asset management, costing, quality, factory connectivity, subscription messaging and interactive image mapping, all in a modular suite.

The eyelit Intelligence™ module gives managers and executives access to critical intelligence throughout the enterprise and global supply chain. This is done through KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), an executive dashboard that can be configured to report on the most critical performance measurements within the organisation.

The eyelit Integration™ module allows production to stay linked to the rest of the enterprise in order to be responsive to changing business needs. Connectivity to other systems (like ERP ) is essential in todays global supply chain operations.

PROMIS MES

Brooks Automation PROMIS is a manufacturing execution system designed to manage production flow, equipment, inventory, and process control, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing facilities. PROMIS stands for '''PRO'''cess '''M'''anufacturing '''I'''ntegration '''S'''ystem. Additional modules are available, e.g. for the management and documentation of preventive maintenance tasks and transfer of production data to ERP -systems.

Being one of the elder software packages in that field, PROMIS runs on OpenVMS and was originally programmed in Fortran . Today, the newer modules are written in C, and C++, and there is also a UNIX version of the system. OpenVMS has a distinct reliability and up-time advantage over more recent operating systems, and is preferred for fabs that have a 24x365 uptime requirement. At the beginning the only user interface available was a VT100 -Terminal. Today, modern java and .net GUI s are used by Fab Operators and Process Engineer s. PROMIS has been very successful in older facilities producing wafers up to 200mm in diameter, but it is less well suited to the additional demands of 300mm wafer fabrication plants.

Tuppas MES Software

Tuppas software provides visibility into what is happening on the plant floor in real time. Collects and delivers information to ERP or other software systems. Tuppas offers single location solutions or implemention at a plant/enterprise wide level. Production scheduling, production reporting, inventory, job/defect tracking, quality control and more are available from Tuppas.

Workstream

Workstream is a factory management system by Applied Materials which manages production, Inventory and Process Control , particularly for Semiconductor Manufacturing .
