DESIGN Different countries have different Building Code s, and so MCP's can be different depending on the country one is in. Typically however, an MCP is usually rectangular with a red border and a white switch with the word "FIRE" written at the top in the country's main language. Manual call points have historically had a glass plate between the switch and the outside world. Originally intended to discourage pranks, this barrier leads to hesitation in activating them in an emergency. Newer designs are now using hinged plastic covers or a repairable "Snapglaze" frangible element. Older MCP's often have text pertaining to "Ring ( 112 / 999 / 911 ) in case of emergency" as the activation of the call point would only ring the alarm system without calling the brigade. Many modern fire systems directly alert the dispatcher so this text is sometimes redundant. However, the dispatchers typically appreciate the phone call anyway, to confirm the exact location and type of emergency, and whether the building is occupied, etc. SEE ALSO EXTERNAL LINKS |
