MSISS, or ''' Management Science and Information Systems Studies''', is an Undergraduate Degree offered in Trinity College Dublin . The broad course offers insights into areas such as Economics , Maths , Statistics , Agricultural Financing and Computer Science . INTRODUCTION MSISS is one of the most challenging and exciting undergraduate degree level courses available in Ireland. It was originally set up in 1980 to provide a degree for Engineer s that would have a greater emphasis on management science and quantitative methods than was to be found in traditional Engineering degrees; until 1995, it was called Management Science and Industrial Systems Studies. Over the past 25 years the programme has continuously evolved and changed so that, at this stage, its roots in engineering have almost disappeared to be replaced by a focus on modern information systems. Today's MSISS programme is designed to bridge a different gap - that between business, information technology and management science. This change reflects changes in Society and Technology and in particular what our own Graduates tell us about what is happening out there in the world of work. The demand for graduates with both business and quantitative skills and a firm understanding of information technology has grown rapidly over the past ten years and is likely to continue to increase for the foreseeable Future . MSISS is about many things, but in particular it is about learning how to solve problems and work with others, two skills that will always be in demand. The primary objective of the MSISS programme is to produce graduates who are numerate as well as Business and Computer literate and who have a solid understanding of how to approach and solve practical problems using a variety of tools and techniques. To do this represents a considerable challenge for us and for you which is what makes MSISS one of the most interesting courses around. JOB PROSPECTS Over the years MSISS has consistently been amongst the best qualifications around for students seeking employment. Because MSISS students are trained in Business, Quantitative Methods, Information Technology and personal skills, they are highly flexible and well equipped for today's job market where employers look for adaptable and widely skilled young people who can handle the pace of modern business. As you might expect, MSISS graduates work in a wide range of fields. Popular career choices include Management Consultancy , Financial Services and Information Systems . Other graduates have gone on to successful careers in General Management , Quality Control and Statistical Analysis . There are also opportunities to specialise in more technical computing and management areas. MSISS is a challenging course and its graduates are highly regarded, thus employment prospects are very high. In recent years good MSISS graduates have had several job offers well before they even sat their finals (sometimes even before they had started their final year!) and all students who wanted to work (as opposed to seeing the world) have found jobs with good employers within a few months of completing their final Examination . MSISS LIFE All the students in MSISS, despite the endless projects and nine a.m. lectures, do thoroughly enjoy the course, especially the social dimension. The big plus with the course is its class size of 24, which makes meeting people and getting to know fellow students much easier than a course like BESS or Engineering. It also means that people are much more willing to help each other and work together, which is very important in a team-centred course like MSISS. There is a strong sense of Community within the course. The MSISS Society also means that there are many inter-year nights out, which are always enjoyable occasions, and one major weekend trip a year. Students from each year get to know each other very well through the duration of the course, especially after the MSISS Soccer League, which is always a bitterly fought competition with a lot of pride at stake. MSISS students tend to socialize together a lot, but it doesn't mean that students don't meet people from other courses. Since many MSISS courses overlap with Engineering and BESS, meeting new people is never a problem even for the shy souls among us. Also if you are a member of any of Trinity's many societies and sporting clubs, you get to know lots of friends from a lot of different backgrounds. Even if you are not into sports or societies, sitting outside the Pavilion bar in College Park on a sunny afternoon is always a good way to meet others and relax. One thing is for sure, there is never a dull moment in Trinity especially in the fast moving world that is MSISS. MSISS FOOTBALL LEAGUE Contrary to the belief of some, MSISS is not all about the degree, it's also about the football. Unleashing passionate emotions in each year of MSISS, the football league is held during the second term each year in the Sports Hall. Contested by teams representing each year, the competition is run on a league basis (hence the nameā¦) with the champions and runners-up qualifying for the cup final - surely the highlight of the academic year. The teams all play each other twice, six games being the difference between glory and ignominy. The games are always contested in a 'friendly' spirit. However, the tremendous pride and passion involved sometimes leads to emotions boiling over. Battered shins and black eyes are not unknown. However, a few friendly pints in the Pav after the match is the usual outcome. Also a MSISS football team, open to students from all four years, play in the Trinity Mega League and Trinity Cup each year. In 2005, the third years were proclaimed undefeated champions, having gained 13 points. Second place were the fourth years, on 4 points. Such a dominance has been the case for a number of years now, and it is feared the league may soon lose out on advertisement deals unless there is greater competition for the top prize. DROP OUTS Due to the very demanding course work, a high proportion of students have been known to fail the course, or leave by their own accord. Despite their luck on the Football Pitch , the 2005/06 fourth year class have seen over 70% of the original class members leave the year for various reasons. Three students are in the year below. HUMPO An infamous MSISS student and legendary goalkeeper whose many endeavours include inventing a fictitious game called "BAGO" and single-handedly costing Trinity the colours on consecutive occasions. The self-proclaimed 'Mr JF MSISS' also goes by the names: "Hornbag", "Horny Bag" and "Bag-of-Horn". Humpo is also reputedly a racist, although he vehimently denies these claims. Nonetheless, his critics remain unconvinced, and continue to spread tales of Humpo's racism. Humpo currently gets his jollies by wearing boots stained with the blood of his transvestite victims SWILSON Dr. Simon Wilson has an interest and expertise in the theory and applications of software reliability. He is a favoured lecturer with 1st years and is famous for creating his very own dance routine. See my bebo page! http://bebo.com/Profile.jsp?MemberId=276276736 EXTERNAL LINKS |
