Information About

Mall At Steamtown

The Mall at Steamtown is a large, two-floor shopping mall complex located off Lackawanna Avenue in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania . It was opened in the early 1990s in order to economically bring back to life the distraught Center City Scranton, which was plauged with major downfalls including the loss of both its major industries, Coal Mining and Railroads .

HISTORY OF CENTER CITY'S ECONOMIC HAVEN

The mall was opened on October 23 , 1993 under the direction of Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey and the assistance of Al Boscov , who had earlier hinted in 1981 that he would possibly open a Boscov's in Scranton, and the Shopco Group LP. The demolition of unneeded space on Lackawanna Avenue and the first signs of the building of the strucutre were witnessed by millions as CNN carried the news story across the globe even on its international affiliates. Among area of lands that were cleared for mall space included
the Samter Building and the Oppenheim Building, both defunct by the early 1990s . The organization, Steamtown USA also donated an extra ten acres of land for the development.
When it opened, the city cheered with much splendor. Within less than a year, Lackawanna County oversaw major economic boosts due in large part to the mall construction. Tourism rates also steadily surged following the 1993 "grand opening." It was clear for the state of Pennsylvania and city residents that the downtown parlor of Scranton needed an economic haven and for many, and the Mall at Steamtown proved to be just that. Proposals to link the mall with an entrance to the Steamtown National Historic Site , which was created as a result of a 1986 bill signed by President Ronald Reagan , were successful as well.

Operated by the Prizm Asset Management Co., the Mall at Steamtown hosts in all, 88 retailers and four major generous anchors: Bon-Ton , Boscov's , Steve & Barry's University Sportswear (the University Of Scranton is located a couple of blocks down Center City), and Marquee Cinema 8 Plex , a small yet high quality movie theater located adjacent to the mall.

PROMOTIONAL EFFORTS

In 2003 , the Steamtown Mall introduced a new advertising pitch in which it promoted that it is "where families shop."
