The Malden airport is a former air force base and has three 5,000 foot runways. GEOGRAPHY Malden is located at 36°34'19" North, 89°58'16" West (36.572045, -89.971133). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 16.1 Km&2 (6.2 Mi&2 ). 16.1 km&2 (6.2 mi&2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 4,782 people, 1,914 households, and 1,261 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 297.3/km&2 (770.4/mi&2). There were 2,101 housing units at an average density of 130.6/km&2 (338.5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.30% White , 24.07% African American , 0.40% Native American , 0.38% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.19% from Other Races , and 1.67% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,914 households out of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were Married Couples living together, 19.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00. In the city the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 81.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.2 males. The median income for a household in the city was $22,910, and the median income for a family was $27,819. Males had a median income of $30,671 versus $16,920 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $12,475. 27.8% of the population and 22.9% of families were below the Poverty Line . 37.4% of those under the age of 18 and 25.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
