Maine Township High School District 207




Composed of Des Plaines and Park Ridge as well as portions of Glenview , Harwood Heights , Morton Grove , Niles , Norridge , Norwood Park and Rosemont , the 36 square mile district lies 30 minutes from downtown Chicago . Primarily residential with some light industry, office developments and shopping centers, the district is adjacent to O'Hare International Airport and lies at the hub of rail and highway transportation.

Neighborhoods that range from modest to affluent are predominantly single family homes, although they also include a mix of apartments, condominiums, and townhouses. The nearly 140,000 residents enjoy the ideal blend of suburban living and urban life in communities that are noted for their park districts, public libraries, hospitals, civic and cultural activities, as well as their convenience to the world famous museums, opera, theaters, and restaurants of metropolitan Chicago.


The Students and The Schools

Acknowledged to be among the nation's best, all three schools in Maine Township High School District 207 are comprehensive learning facilities which have been recognized by the U.S. Department Of Education in the National Secondary School Recognition Program .

More than 6,200 culturally diverse students - grades nine through twelve - are offered an educational program of various ability levels; advanced placement, accelerated, regular, transitional and remedial. Beyond the classroom, there are outstanding athletic and fine arts programs, and more than one hundred clubs and activities providing ample opportunities for personal growth and development.

Students consistently perform at levels well above the national and state norms on the ACT (American College Test) and the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test). Among the leaders in Advanced Placement testing, Maine Township High School students also earn recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program and Illinois State scholar competitions and in other academic, career-related, fine arts and athletic programs.

These comprehensive learning facilities feature state-of-the-art computer writing centers, a district wide computerized library system linked to municipal libraries, university libraries, and research facilities. Well-equipped classrooms, laboratories, shops, radio stations, television studios, and general purpose areas such as gyms, auditoriums, fieldhouses, and cafeterias mean that our students receive their education in an environment that promotes a range of learning opportunities.


The Faculty

A talented and dedicated professional staff of almost 550 provides the motivation for student achievement. Almost 80 percent of the teachers in District 207 have a master's degree or beyond. Staff members in all departments are sought out as consultants and resource personnel for high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States.


Statement of Purpose

Together we educate students to be informed, inquisitive, responsible, creative, and reasoning individuals. The following goals represent the commitment of District 207 to develop all students according to their individual potential.


Goals

  • All students will read, write, speak, and listen effectively in English.

  • All students will recognize their responsibilities as members of a family, the school, the community, the nation, and the world.

  • All students will recognize their responsibilities as stewards of the environment.

  • All students will demonstrate an understanding of and be able to apply the important concepts in mathematics, language, social science, the natural and physical sciences, the fine and/or applied arts and will recognize their interconnections.

  • All students will demonstrate an understanding of the American heritage and other cultures of the world.

  • All students will develop the habits necessary to conduct research, engage in problem solving, and make informed decisions through analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

  • All students will demonstrate cooperation, respect for themselves and others, commitment to quality performance, and will recognize the value of teamwork and leadership.

  • All students will demonstrate an understanding of the principles and applications of technology.

  • All students will develop the skills of self-direction which they will use to engage in life-long learning, prepare for one or more careers, and pursue physical and emotional well-being.

  • All students will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of co-curricular activities and interscholastic competitions. Together we educate students to be informed, inquisitive, responsible, creative, and reasoning individuals.



District Leadership

Maine Township High School District 207 is governed by a seven member Board Of Education . This board is the Legislative , policy-setting authority of the school district and while the board is the hiring authority and approves all hiring (following recommendations by the Superintendent or their designee), the board's only direct employee is the Superintendent Of Schools . The Superintendent Of Schools is the Executive authority of the School District .


Board of Education


=Eric Leys, Board President

Eric Leys of Des Plaines was elected to his first term in 2001, and re-elected in 2005. An alumnus of Maine West High School , Mr. Leys places high priority on embracing the community our schools serve. Mr. Leys has served as chairman of the Board Policy Committee and represents the board as delegate to the Illinois Association Of School Boards .


=Donna Pellar, Board Vice President

Donna Pellar of Park Ridge was elected to her third term as a Board member in 2003. A retired Chicago Public School teacher, Ms. Pellar has a master’s degree in school administration from Northeastern Illinois University .


=Jeffrey Bergen, Board Member

Dr. Jeffrey Bergen of Des Plaines was elected to his third term in 2005. A Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Master of Arts in Mathematics Education program at DePaul University , he received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University Of Chicago . Dr. Bergen’s interests are curriculum and staff development.


=Joann Braam, Board Member

Joann Braam of Des Plaines was elected to her first term in 2003. Ms. Braam is a former member of the Des Plaines Elementary School Board . A freelance writer and mom of three teenage daughters, Ms. Braam earned a master’s degree in social science from the University Of Chicago . Ms. Braam’s interests include running marathons and a Great Books reading group.


=Marijo G. Bustos, Board Member

Marijo G. Bustos of Des Plaines joined the board in 2004. Ms. Bustos earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Indiana University . She is the mother of two children. Her days are spent working as the Medicaid Coordinator at American Pharmaceutical Partners, Inc. She has been an active parent in District 62 for more than a decade. Her involvement includes editor of the Iroquois Community School newsletter, member of the District 62 Liaison Committee and chairperson for various school committees.


=Roger Crawford, Board Member

Roger Crawford of Park Ridge was elected to his third term as a board member in 2003. A former Alderman , Mr. Crawford is Vice President of Environment, Health, and Safety of the Boats and Outboard Engines Division for Bombardier Recreational Products .


=Edward Mueller, Board Member

Edward Mueller of Park Ridge began his first term in 2001, and was re-elected to a second term in 2005. He has a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and is a partner in the law firm of Nisen & Elliott . Mr. Mueller’s interests include curriculum and finance. He is an active member of various professional and community organizations including the Education Committee of the Executives Club Of Chicago .


Superintendent of Schools

The Superintendent of Schools for Maine Township High School District 207 is Dr. C. Steven Snider , who retires June 30, 2006 following eleven years of service to District 207. Dr. Snider's successor is Dr. Joel W. Morris, who was appointed by the Board of Education at a special meeting on February 9, 2006. Dr. Morris previously served as an Assistant Superintendent in District 207 and is a gradute of the district.
