HISTORY Maine Medical Center was founded in 1874 . The Great Fire Of 1866 and the Civil War had destroyed much of Portland. Five years of planning, fundraising, and construction went into the new forty-bed facility which served 114 patients during its first year. The Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary and '''Children's Hospital''' merged with the hospital in 1951 . The present-day complex of more than one million square feet/92,000 square meters was completed in 1984 . Spectrum Medical Group supplies Radiology services to Maine Medical Center patients. GOVERNANCE Maine Medical Center is owned by MaineHealth , the state's largest healthcare consolidation. MaineHealth formed in the late '90s from MMC, with its first board of directors serving from 1999-2000. MaineHealth owns and operates a series of mental, long-term, primary care, emergency, and home healthcare facilities in southern, central, and western Maine.
