Maine Congressional Districts




The U.S. State of Maine currently has two currently has two Congressional Districts .


BACKGROUND

Maine used to be part of Massachusetts . After the 1810 Census , Massachusetts was allocated 20 districts. Seven districts were credited to Maine when it became a state in 1820. All but the 1st and 2nd districts have become obsolete.


DISTRICT 1

The 1st district encompasses the more populous counties of southwestern Maine: Cumberland County , most of Kennebec County , Knox County , Lincoln County , Sagadahoc County , and York County .

The 1st district is represented by Democratic Congressman Tom Allen .


DISTRICT 2

Maine's 2nd district is the largest congressional district east of the Mississippi . It is made up of Androscoggin County , Aroostook County , Franklin County , Hancock County , part of Kennebec County , Oxford County , Penobscot County , Piscataquis County , Somerset County , Waldo County , Washington County .

The 2nd is currently represented by Democratic Congressman Mike Michaud .
