Ludwig von Benedek (Benedek Lajos in Hungarian) ( 1804 -- 1871 ) was an Austria n general of Hungarian nationality. Benedek was born in Hungary . He distinguished himself in the campaigns of 1848-1849, but was defeated by the Prussia ns at Sadowa . He was superseded and tried, but got off and retired to Grätz , where he died. |
