Information About

Lucy Baxley

Lucy Baxley is the current Lieutenant Governor of Alabama , elected in 2002 . She is the first woman to hold that office.

She was born in 1937 near Pansey, Alabama , a small town near Dothan .

She first married at 18; later, she married Bill Baxley , who was an Attorney General of Alabama for two terms and later Lieutenant Governor of Alabama from 1983 to 1987 . She is currently married to Jim Smith.

In 1994 she was elected Treasurer of State of Alabama for the first of two terms lasting until 2002 , at which time she was elected to her present office. She also served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1996 .

Baxley has announced that she will seek the Democratic Party nomination for Governor of Alabama in 2006 . Fellow Democrat and former Governor Don Siegelman indicated he will run against her in the Democratic Party primary. Early polls indicate that Baxley could defeat Republican incumbent Bob Riley by a moderate margin, and would command a strong majority if the Republicans nominated Roy Moore instead of Riley. Baxley has recently gotten a boost in the primaries due to the indictment of Siegelman and recent remarks he has made to the press.
