The area became the heart of Sheffield's steel industry during the 19th and 20th century. However it went into decline during the 1970s and 80s as the nature of steel manufacture changed from large industrial sites with large scale employment to more streamlined and automated manufacture. By the end of the 1980s large areas were derilict. At this point the Sheffield Development Corporation were given the task of redeveloping the area. Today it is home to Meadowhall shopping centre, Valley Centretainment and Sheffield Arena . It is now also one of the main centres for sport in the UK with Don Valley Stadium , IceSheffield and the English Institute Of Sport - Sheffield are all concentrated within the area. Despite the percived decline the steel industry it is now producing more than at anytime in it's history. |
