It is situated in the valley of the in the house clearances in the 1970s.

ICI was a major employer in the area with a sizeable dyestuffs factory which often made the River Irk run in different colours! Local amenties included up to 20 small shops and at one point 5 pubs including The Swan, The Waterloo and The Crumpsall Hotel.

There is a small Anglican Church, St Thomas's, which is now amalgamted with St Mark's in Cheetham and a local primary School also named St Thomas's.

These are opposite the site of a large biscuit factory operated by the Cooperative Wholesale Society , which is now demolished.
