Low-rise jeans are pants made of Jeans , with a deliberately low-cut waist, intended to wear low on the hips. OVERVIEW Lowrise jeans are pants intended for wearing low on the hips, or below the hips, and are therefore also known by the names Lowcut jeans, Hipsters , Hip-huggers and Lowriders . They are intentionally cut lower on the waist, thus covering less body on front (the Belly ) and the back. Usually the jeans sits at least three inches lower than the Belly Button . The "rise" of a jeans is determined by the distance between the . The latter can also be classified as "Ultra Lowrise Jeans", and the small zipper no longer has its traditional function, but rather becomes a display of fashion, an additional marking of a lowrise jeans. CHANGING THE LOOK OF THE BODY Lowrise jeans often make legs appear shorter, but the upper body or the Torso looks longer. Therefore, lowrise jeans is most often recommended for people with a short torso and long legs. It is also often said that the butt often appear to be smaller in a lowrise jeans. LOWRISE AS A FASHION First popular in the sixties, called "hip-huggers" The fashion of lowrise jeans reamerged somewhere in the second half of the 90's, and has become increasingly popular in the past few years, particularly among girls between the age of 14 and 25, although its popularity also increases among women of other ages, and also among men, although the major focus still goes to the Teenager girls, with typical teenager stores selling lowrise jeans in different styles and colours. Lowrise jeans are manufactured in many styles, and though tight jeans are usually the most popular, they also exist in loose, baggy, flare and destroyed style. Due to the popularity of lowrise jeans, manufacturers have also begun making lowrise styles of other kinds of pants. In the stores today, there is an immense variety available. The primary intention of wearing lowrise jeans is to show more skin at the waist and hips. As a result, girls will usually wear these pants in combination with shorter Tops , giving a glimpse of skin between the jeans and the top, or (more commonly in the summer or in warmer countries) showing their entire midriff including the belly button. The intention of a lowrise jeans is to show more skin, not less, and it therefore would lose its main purpose if worn under a long Shirt or Sweater . COMBINING WITH UNDERWEAR One of the effects of a lowrise jeans is not only the display of more skin on the belly button, but also the (partially or completely) revealing of your Buttocks when sitting down or bending over. In many cases, this means that also the Underwear often becomes visible. Girls often wear lowrise jeans as a fashion, and the display of butt and underwear is simply an additional "effect", although this too has had an impact on fashion. Becoming aware that their underwear is no longer always hidden inside their pants, more people begin to choose their underwear in function of their pants. The most commonly worn underwear under a lowrise jeans would be a Thong , due to its nature of exposing more skin than it covers. Panties are also still worn regularly under lowrise jeans. A third fashion is to Wear No Underwear at all under the pants. Some jeans are too low to wear regular underwear under, creating the fashion of "lowcut thongs". This fashion is promoted, for example, by Dorinha Wear who offer a lowcut thong with each lowrise jeans. But also the opposite trend exists, where people will choose to wear underwear deliberately showing above the jeans permanently, even when not sitting down or bending over. For this fashion, high-cut thongs are often bought. More increasingly, people will wear their pants lower than their underwear, and in many cases the underwear also shows a glimpse or more on the front. THE WHALE-TAIL THONG When a thong shows up above a lowrise jeans on the back, it is usually referred to as a "whale-tail", due to its somewhat similar shape. It is usually seen when a person is sitting down or bending over, but also deliberately worn by some to be seen while just standing up or walking. TATTOOS Tattoos are also often placed on the lower belly or back, in function of the lowrise jeans. While a regular pants would normally not have displayed a tattoo in that spot, it would be visible now. These tattoos are often referred to as "Tramp-stamps" BEYOND UNDERWEAR AND TATTOOS Some people will go even further than displaying their underwear or tattoos, and deliberately display Pubic Hair or Genitals while wearing lowrise jeans, naturally without wearing any underwear. LEGAL MATTERS Legislator Derrick Shepherd of the state of Louisiana in the USA made an attempt in 2004 to outlaw the fashion of lowrise jeans, particularly to bring a halt to the display of underwear under the pants, claiming it to be disrespectful and Obscene . People still spotted with their "whale tail" would be fined $500. This bill, known as HB 1703 , was rejected by the Louisiana House, however. A similar bill was attempted in Virginia , USA, putting a $50 fine on anyone deliberately showing their underwear. The bill was rejected in February 2005 . Further Conservative reactions come from schools, putting a particular Dress Code on their students, not allowing them to wear pants below a certain area of their body, or displaying underwear. Despite the several objections from law, schools and parents, the fashion of lowrise jeans continues to increase in popularity, while the pants themselves continue to decrease in their "rise" height. MEDICAL CONCERNS In 2003 , Dr. Malvinder S. Parmar pointed out that wearing tight lowrise jeans puts pressure on a sensory nerve, which can cause pain and paresthesia in the nerve's area of distribution. This is known as Meralgia Paresthetica , showing symptoms of tingling or a burning sensation on the lateral aspect of the thigh. The problem with previously examined patients was resolved when they avoided wearing tight lowrise jeans, after 4 to 6 weeks. SOURCES |
