Lloyd Cole (born January 31 , 1961 ) is an English -born Singer and Songwriter , known for his role as lead singer of '' Lloyd Cole And The Commotions '' from 1984 to 1989 and for his subsequent solo work. He was born in Buxton, Derbyshire. He grew up in nearby Chapel En Le Frith and went to New Mills Grammar School. After failing in law at University College Of London , he later attended (but did not graduate from) the University Of Glasgow where he studied philosophy and English and met the other members of The Commotions. Their debut, ''Rattlesnakes'', contained numerous literary and pop culture references to figures like Norman Mailer , Grace Kelly , Eve Marie Saint , Truman Capote and Joan Didion . The group produced two more albums, Easy Pieces and Mainstream , before disbanding in 1987, when Cole re-located to New York to record with legendary musicians like Fred Maher and Robert Quine . This solo setting produced two acclaimed album, Lloyd Cole and Don't Get Weird On Me Babe . The later was recorded with one side of the LP recorded with a session orchestra, much in the style of Burt Bacharach or Scott Walker , while the other continued on the New York rock he mastered on his first solo album. Although some reviewer have claimed Don't Get Weird On Me Babe (the title being a quote from the American Neo-realism poet Raymond Carver ) to be his creative peak, it produced significantly lesser record sales which made his major record company to invest significantly less in the marketing of the following two solo albums, Bad Vibes and Love Story before being dropped altogether from the roster of the majors. These two albums were experimental, Bad Vibes being a collaboration with the producer/remixer Adam Peters creating a harder, Grunge and Psychadelia inspired sound, while the latter established the stripped, folky and acoustic sound landscapes with the help of Stephen Street (famous for his work with Blur and The Smiths ). Since then, he has released albums on smaller independent labels, like One Little Indian , home of Björk , and Sanctuary Records , company responsible for the revival of Morrissey , yet still reaching an ever wider audience. The Singer-songwriter style of Folk Music inspired pop of the following albums like Etc. and Music In A Foreign Language are mixed with collaboration with the New York band The Negatives featuring Jill Sobule and Dave Derby of the Dambuilders and an instrumental ambient Electronica album, Plastic Wood . He is constantly on tour, playing intimate club venues in a one man acoustic setting. However, in 2004, to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of ''Rattlesnakes'', Lloyd Cole and the Commotions reformed to perform a one-off, sell-out tour in the UK and Ireland . As an avid golfer, he is also known for playing concerts in towns which suspiciously are close to famous golf courses. He also share the passion for this sport with Alice Cooper who is said to introduce the song ''Only Women Bleed'' claiming ”not even Lloyd Cole have written a song about menstruation" when playing live. Cole is currently working on another solo album, which will feature the guitar of former Commotion Neil Clark on some tracks {Link without Title} . Discography
