, played by
Beverley Callard , is a
Fictional Character on the
Soap Opera Coronation Street .
Liz originally appeared in 1989 with husband Jim and sons
Steve and Andy. Liz and Jim had a stormy marriage, caused by his hot temper. Soon after arriving on the Street, Liz made friends with
Deirdre Barlow , whose daughter,
Tracy , was a little younger than the twins.
Shortly after a miscarriage, Liz and Jim's marriage broke up. Jim wrongly believed her to be having an affair, and assaulted her. After she walked out, he began stalking her, and she obtained a court injunction to keep him away. He spent a short time in prison as a result. They were briefly reconciled when Jim had an accident and was unable to walk for several months. However, Liz then began a relationship with Jim's physiotherapist. During this period, Liz was voted the character viewers would most like to see leave the Street.
Liz left the show in 1998, but returned in
2000 and was once again reconciled with Jim. Jim was once again sent to prison, this time for manslaughter after attacking a drug-dealer who had tried to kill Steve. Jim and Liz re-married, and she moved away from Weatherfield in 2001, in order to be able to visit him regularly.
After a series of one-off appearances, Liz once again returned in 2003, and involved herself in the wrangle over
Amy , the child Steve had fathered during a one-night-stand with Tracy. On hearing that Jim's remission had been cancelled because he had assaulted another prison inmate, Liz decided she was no longer willing to wait for him, and they once again split up.
