During the 1980s and 1990s a relatively large number of companies appeared selling primarily 2D Graphics Card s, but later 3D also. Most of those companies have subsequently disappeared, as the increasing complexity of GPU s substantially increased research and development costs. Some of the companies went bankrupt. Some were bought out. Others sold out. It is notable that so far ATI Technologies is the only graphics card vendor that has lasted for any amount of time, although NVIDIA , through its successful motherboard diversification, also seems relatively secure.
