"When The Water Breaks" is so named because when the band was writing the central section, John Petrucci got word that his wife's water had broken. There is a "baby soundscape" to landmark the part of the piece being written when he got the news.
John Petrucci tells us in the notes to the album that ''Hourglass'' was written and recorded in the wee hours with old strings - an indication of how much freer Liquid Tension Experiment is musically than Dream Theater.
The short piano ending at the end of ''When the Water Breaks'' appears during the live performance of '' release.
