Lipjan is a city in central Kosovo . In Roman times the city was known as '''Ulpiana''' from which the name Lipjan is derived. Ulpiana was named by the Romans in honor of the Roman Emperor Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus . It is thought to be the birth place of Lekë Dukagjini ( 1410 - 1481 ), who replaced Skanderbeg as leader of the Albanian resistance against the Ottomans following the latters death in 1468 . The non- Latin form ''Lypenion'' for the city occurs for the first time in a Greek text from 1018 AD. EXTERNAL LINKS |
