Liping Zhang

A series of outstanding interpretations in both the belcanto and lyric repertoire have established the young Canadian Liping Zhang as one of opera’s leading international sopranos, with engagements at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera New York and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Over the next few seasons she will return to Covent Garden three times (Mimi, Micaela and Cio-Cio-San) and the Metropolitan Opera (Liu). She will also make her debuts at the Opera de Paris and the Liceu Barcelona.

Most recently, she has been seen at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in the role of Lucia and with the Teatro di Regio Parma in the role of Gilda opposite the Rigoletto of Leo Nucci and the Duca of Ramon Vargas.

Liping Zhang was born in Southern China and studied at the Beijing Conservatoire, before moving to Canada, where she appeared as Mimi (La Bohème), Leila (Les Pêcheurs de Perles), Liu (Turandot), Marguerite (Faust) and Lucia (Lucia di Lammermoor).

Liping Zhang came to international attention in the role of Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly), which she has sung at Covent Garden, Den Norske Opera, the Metropolitan Opera and at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin. She has since returned to the Norwegian Opera as Mimi (La Bohème), and will sing Gilda in season 2005/6..

In Asia, Liping Zhang has sung Mimi (La Boheme) in Hong Kong and Violetta (La Traviata) at the Shanghai International Festival, whilst in the USA she has appeared at the New York City Opera as Cio-Cio-San and Mimi, and Baltimore Opera as Cio-Cio-San.

In 2002, Liping Zhang made a stunning Covent Garden debut as Liu (Turandot). She made a triumphant return to Covent Garden in September 2003 as Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly), before returning to Covent Garden three months later to make the house her own with her acclaimed interpretation of Lucia di Lammermoor. In November 2003 she sang Cio-Cio-San at Opera Michigan in a performance that critics said ‘represents the world standard. This is a singer, indeed a theatrical experience, not to be missed’. She made her Met debut in the role in April 2004 and was named on the Metropolitan Opera’s website as a notable debutante.

Future engagements include Mimi (La Bohème) and Micaela (Carmen) at the Royal Opera Covent Garden; Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly) at the Opéra de Paris and the Teatro del Liceu Barcelona; Gilda (Rigoletto) at the Den Norske Opera, Oslo; and Liu (Turandot) at the Metropolitan Opera New York.
