HOW THE SERVICE WORKS When seniors fall, a telephone is often out of reach and they may be left helpless. Life Alert's service addresses this problem by providing emergency monitoring and assistance services. Each subscriber is given a small waterproof pendant, to be worn at all times. When needed, he or she activates the pendant by pressing its button; this instantly activates a control unit located in one's home, next to the home phone. The unit then notifies the Life Alert Monitoring Center, beginning a two-way voice exchange between the wearer and an operator. The operator assists the customer, calling for appropriate help. Should there be no response from the wearer, Life Alert notifies the proper authorities (e.g., paramedics, fire department, police), and help is sent. The type of protection Life Alert offers enables seniors to keep on living in their own homes rather than move into nursing homes. SEE ALSO " I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up !"
