Information About

Lieutenant (star Trek)

Lieutenant is a commissioned Rank of the Starfleet in the fictional universe of Star Trek .

Lieutenant is perhaps the most common rank to appear in the entire Star Trek series. Throughout nearly forty years of production, the rank of Lieutenant has been held by several major characters and dozens of extras. The rank can trace its origins to the original pilot episode " The Cage " where the Executive Officer of the USS Enterprise, the mysterious "Number One", holds the rank of Lieutenant along with a very young Lieutenant Spock.

Lieutenant was also common in ''Star Trek: The Original Series'', held by the main characters of Lieutenants Uhura and Sulu as well as several guest star roles.

In ''Star Trek: The Motion Picture'', the former Ensign Chekov is promoted to Lieutenant and Star Trek fans are introduced to the character of Lieutenant Ilia .

Subsequent to ''Star Trek: The Motion Picture'', the rank of Lieutenant fell into disuse and there were only two characters to appear in the films holding the rank. The characters in question, however, Lieutenants Saavik and Valeris , wore differing rank insignia. The " Star Trek Encyclopedia " would later confirm that Saavik was a Lieutenant Junior Grade and Valeris a Lieutenant Commander.

The first time that the feature film rank pin of Lieutenant was shown clearly on screen was not in a Star Trek film, but rather in an episode of '''', the rank pin is seen on the tactical officer. However, other than these times and a few quick shots from Star Trek III and VI, these are the only times that the movie era rank of Lieutenant is shown on camera.

Several characters of ''Star Trek: The Next Generation'' held the rank of Lieutenant to include ''.

Lieutenant is also a rank held by a major character of '''', that being Lieutenant Malcolm Reed .
