Lieutenant, Junior Grade ('''LTJG'''), is a Rank in the United States Navy and Coast Guard . As a Commissioned Officer , an LTJG leads Non-commissioned Officer s and Enlisted Personnel . This rank is sometimes known as "Lieutenant, Junior God" due to a unpleasant personality change which frequently occurs when an Ensign achieves this rank. The time for promotion to LTJG is a minimum of two years after commissioning in the Navy or eighteen months in the Coast Guard. The equivalent rank in the United States Army , United States Marine Corps and United States Air Force is First Lieutenant .
