GEOGRAPHY Liberty is located at 39°52'48" North, 91°6'29" West (39.879948, -91.108137). According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 1.0 Km&2 (0.4 Mi&2 ). 1.0 km&2 (0.4 mi&2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. HISTORY "Liberty Township began with the first settlement made on Section 28, by Daniel Lile, in the spring of 1822, and many old settlers followed about the same time. The first regular preacher was George Wolfe of the Dunkard denomination. First horse mill was built by Daniel Lile. The first marriage was that of Jacob Waggle to a Miss Hunsaker, by the Rev. George Wolfe, at the house of the bride's father. The first birth and death, was an infant child of Mr. Kimbrick. The first Supervisor was David Wolfe. The town of Liberty is nearly in the center of the township and is quite a flourishing little town. Liberty is inhabited by an industrious and intelligent people, who have fine farms and desirable houses" An Early History of Liberty Township from 1875 atlas DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 519 people, 212 households, and 159 families residing in the village. The Population Density was 541.6/km&2 (1,386.7/mi&2). There were 231 housing units at an average density of 241.1/km&2 (617.2/mi&2). The racial makeup of the village was 99.81% White , 0.00% African American , 0.19% Native American , 0.00% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.00% from Other Races , and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.19% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 212 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were Married Couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.0% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.79. In the village the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males. The median income for a household in the village was $36,417, and the median income for a family was $39,773. Males had a median income of $31,071 versus $20,962 for females. The Per Capita Income for the village was $16,565. 12.2% of the population and 10.7% of families were below the Poverty Line . 9.8% of those under the age of 18 and 40.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
