The party was formed on March 28 , 2004 when the local branch of the Left Party in Gnesta voted to leave the mother party.

The move followed an internal power struggle between the right-wing and left-wing factions of the party that culminated with the election of Lars Ohly as party leader in early 2004, a resounding victory for the left-wing.

The party holds on to the two seats in the Gnesta municipal assembly.

The mother party did however rapidly refound a branch in Gnesta, larger than the pre-split branch. 6 party members had left to form 'Vänsterdemokraterna' whereas the new refounded branch assembled 7 members.

'Vänsterdemokraterna' was later, at a meeting in Stockholm on January 29 2006 , constituted as a nation-wide party with ambitions to contest the 2006 parliamentary elections. The party board of the new party became
