A lector, in Latin , is a broad definition for a person who reads, aloud or not. It is also a specific title, not translated in many languages as English (but in French for example ''Lecteur''), in various uses :


ACADEMIC

  • teaching office

  • ''lector jubilate'' is a title, equivalent to Doctor of Divinity (e.g. at the Catholic university of Leuven=Louvain)



ECCLESIASTICAL

  • liturgic function, also performed by laymen, of reading to the congregation: mainly the epistle, but not the gospel (reserved for the Celebrant; an exception may be made for other parts in the role-play reading on Palm Sunday when lacking another priest), the devotional prayers and various other texts (generally not part of the prescribed liturgy)

  • Reader (minor Orders)



CULTURAL

In Poland, a lector is used instead of closed captioning to make foreign language films and programs accessible to Polish speakers. The lector is typically a male voice, and the same deep male voice speaks both male and female parts. The actual voices in the film can be heard softly in the background. Polish viewers seem to prefer the lector to other methods of translation of television programs.
