An apostate can range from someone who has officially resigned their membership , to someone who privately no longer believes in the doctrines of the Church. Apostates who openly speak out against the Church are subject to Church discipline, including Disfellowship or Excommunication . All members are counseled to be avoid personal apostasy, which can include Fasting , Prayer , Scripture reading, or discussing their problems with their Bishop . Latter Day Saints are taught to have a loving and hopeful attitude toward apostates, and are strongly counseled to love those who have left the faith, and to work with those who have strayed, inviting "the lost sheep" back to the fold.
