PLOT The megalomaniacal android Ultron , wanting revenge on the Avengers for his string of defeats, broke into a time capsule that contained the recorded history of humanity and planted within it a document detailing the defeat of the Avengers. Just as Ultron had planned, Kang The Conqueror read the document centuries later, and, confident that he would be the one to defeat the Avengers, travelled back to the present, and invited Ultron and other villains to join him. Together they dropped a nuclear bomb on the Avengers Mansion, killing the "New Avengers". This act brought the surviving members of the original Avengers back together, which is just what Ultron had planned. Times had changed in the Marvel Universe. Nearly all of the supervillains had been executed by the government, who agreed to pay superheroes for turning them in, essentially getting the heroes to do their dirty work for them. Captain America , appalled at the government's actions, had run for President, hoping to turn things around. His presidency was a successful one, only for him to be assassinated into his third term. With all of the founding Avengers dead, the leadership duties of the group lay with Henry Pym , who severely doubted his leadership abilities, but nonetheless assembled as many heroes as he could to stop Kang and Ultron. When the time came to battle the villains, however, Pym lost his nerve and retreated to the sub-atomic dimension, leaving the others to combat the villains. A spectacular battle ensued between the Avengers and their foes, and ultimately Pym did return to battle, although he was killed by Kang. His wife Janet then killed Kang in retaliation. When only Ultron remained on the villains' side, he grew to enormous size and seemed to have the upper hand. The day was saved by the arrival of the Vision , who earlier had refused to join the Avengers out of grief. The Vision destroyed Ultron, sacrificing his own life in the process. After the battle, a memorial was held for all of the fallen heroes. The audience then learns that Captain America is not in fact dead, but is in hiding until his injuries can be healed. He has in fact been recording the events of the story on a series of sophisticated computer monitors. As the story ends, Cap tells the computer to save the file so that future generation can see the Avengers' final victory. CHARACTERS The Avengers
In this universe, Hank and Janet eventually reconciled and remarried. Hank supported them both with his scientific work, although he was unable to halt the physiological breakdown of Janet's body - years of size-changing was now causing her to lose an inch in height every year. It was Hank and Janet who received the invitation from the villains for a final battle after the deaths of the New Avengers, and then took it upon themselves to recruit a new roster of Avengers. Doubting his abilities to lead the team, Hank lost his nerve just before the battle began, fleeing to the Microverse. Janet continued to battle alone with the Avengers, and when she was nearly killed by Oddball, Hank returned to save her. He was then cowardly shot in the back by Kang, and Janet furiously killed Kang in retaliation. Janet survived the final battle and attended the memorial service for her husband and the other fallen Avengers.
In this universe, both Clint and Barbara were still alive, and happily married. They were retired after Hawkeye was blinded during their final mission with the Avengers, and Mockingbird didn't want to put themselves at risk anymore. Eventually, though, they relented, and joined the Avengers in their final battle. Despite being blind, Hawkeye used a special earpiece to aid his excellent archery skills. After the battle, Hawkeye mentioned to Mockingbird and the others that Captain America was still alive, but nobody believed him.
Formerly of the Fantastic Four , Johnny Storm agreed to join the Avengers, to the concern of his wife Alicia Masters and the disgust of their pacifistic teenage daughter Marissa, who had inherited her father's powers. Johnny survived the final battle and was reunited with his relieved family.
Formerly of the X-Men , Sam Guthrie also agreed to join the Avengers. During the final battle, however, Kang was able to get close enough to Cannonball to be encased within his force-field, and then shot Cannonball dead.
Son of the Vision and the Scarlet Witch, Tommy spent his days studying to be a sorceror. He aided the Avengers against the villains, including his own brother Billy. Tommy survived the final battle and presumably resumed his training.
The daughter of She-Hulk and Wyatt Wingfoot , Jessie had similar powers to that of her mother and gladly agreed to join the Avengers. She was killed in battle by the Grim Reaper.
Two mercenaries who joined the Avengers. Hotshot was a weapons expert who claimed to be the son of the Black Knight . Bombshell claimed that she was Hercules' daughter, and had the ability to cause spontaneous explosions. In the final battle Hotshot was killed and Bombshell lost a leg. The Villains
The evil android was one of the few survivors of the "Villain Massacre", and therefore needed aid in battling the Avengers. He tricked Kang into joining him, who then recruited Oddball and the Grim Reaper. During the final battle Ultron split into several smaller robots who combatted the Avengers directly, but many of them were destroyed. When his allies were vanquished, Ultron merged with all of his other androids, growing to enormous size and preparing to crush the remaining Avengers. The Vision suddenly appeared and merged his molecular structure with Ultron's, causing them both to explode.
After reading the "historic document" of the Avengers' defeat, Kang believed that he was the one destined to defeat them. He gleefully recruited Ultron and the others to attack the Avengers, killing the New Avengers and challenging the older heroes to a final battle. Kang killed several heroes in the fracas, but after killing Henry Pym he made the mistake of gloating over it, and ended up killed by the Wasp, who shot her stings through his eyes and into his brain.
Billy Maximoff, Tommy's brother, chose instead to be a villain, using his powers against the Avengers. The two brothers locked up in combat, but were stopped when their father arrived and destroyed Ultron, ending the battle. Whether Billy reformed after this is unknown.
A bizarre creature and the Grim Reaper's companion, Oddball could give people mental disorders through physical contact. He disoriented the Wasp, and nearly killed her, but was then shrunk down to miniature size and crushed by Henry Pym. Former Avengers
Years ago, during the Pyms' second marriage, a jealous Quicksilver confronted the Vision and challenged him to a fight to the death. The Scarlet Witch, not wanting her brother or her husband to be hurt, placed herself between the two. Quicksilver was unable to stop and crashed into his sister, crushing her against the Vision's immovable form and killing her. Horrified at what he had done, Quicksilver ran off a cliff, killing himself. This tragedy caused the Vision to renounce his emotions and withdraw from humanity.
Twenty years ago, Hercules and Thor discovered an evil force that threatened both Olympus and Asgard . Recruiting the Thing and the Hulk to aid them, the mighty heroes marched into battle. Ultimately, the godly realms were annihilated, the world was ravaged by fierce storms, and the only survivor of the battle was the Hulk.
After the cataclysm that destroyed the sacred realms, the Hulk was found barely alive and clutching Hercules' mace. He rejoined the Avengers, but the horrors that he had witnessed had damaged his mind. During a mission with the Avengers, the Hulk's mind finally snapped, and he attacked his teammates. The Hulk died when Wonder Man used the last of his strength to destroy him.
When the Hulk turned traitor, Tigra tried to disable him, but he simply laughed and tore her in two. The Hulk then battled Wonder Man, and tore his chest open. This caused the ion radiation within Wonder Man to start to leak. Wonder Man ordered Mockingbird and Hawkeye to flee, holding onto the Hulk to prevent his escape. He then exploded like an atomic bomb, annihilating himself and the Hulk. Mockingbird and Hawkeye escaped, but Hawkeye was blinded when he looked back to the explosion.
Iron Man attended Captain America's funeral, but he was never seen again, and no mention was made of him when the other Avengers were assembled. Whatever happened to him remains a mystery.
All of these former Avengers were unable to attend the final battle. According to Henry Pym, Black Widow was crippled, Black Panther was dead, Quasar was insane, and Wild Man was dead ''and'' insane.
After the death of his wife, the Vision resented his newfound emotions and withdrew from humanity, slowly dissipating his molecules until he virtually ceased to exist. He even ignored his son Tommy and the other Avengers' pleas to aid them. In the end, however, the Vision forced himself to face his repressed memories of his wife's death and knew what he had to do. He flew towards the battle, where a giant Ultron was threatening the Avengers. The Vision heroically merged his molecular density with Ultron's, destroying them both.
Appalled at the American government after the "Villain Massacre", Captain America left his life as a superhero and ran for President instead. His presidency was a large success, but he was shockingly shot and seemingly killed in his third term, causing the other heroes to lose faith. However, Cap was not dead, but placed in suspended animation in a secret location until the technology to heal him could be developed. With a sophisticated series of computer monitors, Captain America watched his friends win their final battle and recorded it for historical purposes.
Formed by President America to handle any threats, the New Avengers instead spent most of their time goofing off. They were killed during a poker game when Kang nuked Avengers Mansion. The members of the New Avengers were Super-Ego, '''Gestalt''', '''High Tide''', '''Sequoia''', and a fifth, unidentified member. Other Heroes
Now the Sorceror Supreme of Earth's dimension, Doctor Stephen Strange became reclusive, like his mentor, the Ancient One. He trained young Tommy Maximoff to someday succeed him.
Ben Grimm was recruited by Thor and Hercules to aid them in the battle to save their realms. The Thing died alongside Thor and Hercules.
During the horrific natural disasters that marked the end of Olympus and Asgard, She-Hulk and the Invisible Woman were last seen hiding out in Paris, France , which was the only area spared by the disasters. They were never seen again.
After the death of the Thing and the disappearance of his wife, Reed Richards disbanded the Fantastic Four and concentrated on his science. Eventually age took its toll on his flexible body, forcing him to wear a body brace just to maintain his shape. When the government began demanding supervillains to be handed over for execution, Reed saved his old friend Victor Von Doom by abducting him and giving him a Frontal Lobotomy , thus rendering him harmless. The two former rivals then spent their days in retirement, as Reed attempted to teach Victor how to play chess.
Peter Parker turned down an invitation to join the Avengers, as he had retired from being Spider-Man years earlier and instead worked as a scientist at Henry Pym's company. In this universe Peter is still happily married to Mary Jane Watson , and they have a young son, Ben.
Daredevil was still active during Captain America's funeral, but his activities after that are unknown.
Completely unmentioned in this story is the fate of the X-Men. With the exception of Cannonball, none of the mutants appear or are mentioned, and their ultimate fate is unknown. |
