Langley High School
Langley High School is a public high school in Fairfax County , Virginia , United States . Langley high school serves students in the McLean , Great Falls , Reston , and Vienna communities. Langley is a part of the Fairfax County Public Schools system. Langley was ranked by Washingtonian Magazine as the second best high school in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Newsweek Magazine rated it the 50th best public high school in the nation. HISTORY Langley High School, located in Fairfax County, Virginia, opened in 1965 in order to accommodate an overcrowded McLean High School, located near by. According to tax records, which assess the school at $31.87 million, Langley is situated on 42 acres of land. However, it should be noted that the actual property has the physical feel of being no more than 10. During the last 40 years, Langley has undergone several extensive renovations, including the construction of what is now known as Hertzler Hall. Currently, Langley is slated to be renovated by the end of the decade. DEMOGRAPHICS Langley enrolled 2,001 students in the 2005-2006 school year. Its student body is 79% White; 2% Black; 2% Hispanic; and 17% Asian. ACADEMICS The LHS academic program follows the standard FCPS guidelines, requiring 24 credits for graduation. Additionally provided at Langley is the Advanced Placement (AP) program. Langley offers one of the most comprehensive AP programs available, featuring more than 20 AP level classes in every discipline. The academic gems of Langley rest in its course offerings. As of 2003, Langley was the only school in the FCPS system to offer AP Macro/Microeconomics. Additonally significant courses include the school's Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra classes, which are taught via closed-circuit television, and AP Russian Language, the only course of its kind. In 2005 the mean SAT score was 1199 (591 Verbal; 608 Math). Langley's SAT averages are the highest of all the comprehensive Fairfax County high schools ( Jefferson's SAT average is higher, but it is a magnet school). ADMINISTRATION Langley High School is currently run by an administration consisting of one principal, and four assistants. ATHLETICS Langley plays in the AAA Liberty District of the Northern Region . The Langley sports teams are all referred to as the "Saxons" (or "Lady Saxons" for some women-only sports). |
