Landon School




Landon's mission statement reads, "Landon School prepares talented boys for productive lives as accomplished, responsible and caring men whose actions are guided by the principles of perseverance, teamwork, honor and fair play." The school's motto is "Virtute et non vi", meaning, "By virtue, not by force." The school prides itself on its student-initiated and student-run Honor Code, begun in the early 1960s.

Landon is regarded as one of the top private schools in the Washington, D.C. area. The average SAT score among the seniors is in the mid 1300's, and the most common schools that Landon grads matriculate to are Georgetown, Duke, UVA, Princeton, Maryland, and a host of the other Ivy League Schools, including Harvard and Cornell. Along with its first-rate academics, Landon is also committed to the arts. 100% of the student body in grades 3-8 participate in both music and art. The Upper School has a two-year requirement for either music or art. The school boasts musical groups such as the Chamber Singers, the Bearitones, a Jazz Band, a Concert Band, a String Ensemble, and Handbells. Studio art classes include ceramics, digital arts, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

A notable academic institution, Landon is also often recognized for its sports teams and, in particular, its lacrosse team, which has in recent years been ranked as high as #1 in the nation. There are currently 6 Landon grads captaining the country's best Division 1 lacrosse teams, including Johns Hopkins, Duke, and UVA. Landon also boasts numerous All-Americans in NCAA D1 lacrosse, and the class of 2005 featured an unheard of 13 D1 recruits. Landon currently has 13 Varsity sports in all: football, soccer, cross country, basketball, ice hockey, wrestling, swimming, riflery, lacrosse, baseball, track and field, tennis, and golf.

Landon uses the teacher-coach model, in which its faculty also serve as advisors and coaches to the boys. As Of 2005 , significant faculty members include Tom Dixon, Mac Jacoby, Steven Sorkin, Alan Rosenthal, Earl Jackson, Frederico Mora, Bob Long, Rob Bordley, Sara Atherton, Richard Brockhaus, Ellie Johnson, Edwin Sundt, Alfredo Benavides and Marcos Williams.

Graduates include Maury Povich , Tom Scott of Nantucket Nectars , historian Alan Brinkley , Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun , former #1 NBA draft pick and NBA rookie of the year Fred Hetzel, Paul Kern, and Congressman John Jacob Rhodes III .

Landon's sister school is the Holton-Arms School , also located in Bethesda.
