According to the will of Queen Elizabeth's father, Henry VIII , Elizabeth's throne was to pass to the descendants of Henry's younger sister, Mary Tudor, Duchess Of Suffolk And Dowager Queen Of France , making her the logical heir. (While a senior line of descent from Mary Tudor still existed in the descendants of Lady Catherine Grey , the annulment of her marriage to Edward Seymour, 1st Earl Of Hertford removed them from the royal succession.) However, James VI Of Scotland was Elizabeth's closest relative in the senior line, and had been favored as her successor for several years before Elizabeth's death. Anne was an unmarried woman at the time of Elizabeth's death in 1603 . Anne was passed over in favor of James, who became James I of England; the heir to her claim is Michael Abney-Hastings, 14th Earl Of Loudoun . Anne Stanley married, firstly, Grey Brydges, 5th Baron Chandos of Sudeley on February 28 , 1607/8. She married, secondly, Sir Mervyn Tuchet, 2nd Earl Of Castlehaven , on July 22 , 1624 at Harefield , thus becoming Countess of Castlehaven. She apparently shared in his lasciviousness and gross immorality, bearing a child by one of his manservants and sexual companions. However, her accusation that he was an accomplice to her rape by one of the servants ultimately brought about his execution. She died at Ruislip , and was buried on October 11 , 1647 . She had one daughter, by Grey Brydges, 5th Baron Chandos of Sudeley: Elizabeth Brydges ( 1619 – c. March 1678/9). She married her stepfather's son and heir, James Tuchet, 3rd Earl Of Castlehaven . -- Another Anne Stanley was her first cousin, and they should not be confused: Lady Anne Stanley, Countess of Ancram (b. c. 1600 – February 1656/7), was daughter of William Stanley, 6th Earl Of Derby and Lady Elizabeth De Vere . She was also a great-granddaughter of Eleanor Brandon . Anne married Sir Henry Portman on July 20 , 1615 . He died on February 12 , 1620/1. She married Sir Robert Kerr, 1st Earl Of Ancram , either on or after November 6 , 1621 , as his second wife. She died Intestate and her estate was administered to her son Charles on June 9 , 1657 .
