Information About

Labour Thanksgiving Day

The modern holiday was established after World War II in 1948 as a day to mark the changes of the postwar constitution of Japan. Fundamental human rights and the expansion of the rights of workers were some of the changes within the consitution. More traditionally, and perhaps to an extent today, it's a celebration of the year's hard work and in the old Niinamesai, the emperor would dedicate the year's harvest to Kami (godly spirit) and taste the rice for the first time

There are a number of events held on Labor Thanksgiving Day such as a Labor Festival held in Nagano. The event is sponsored to encourage the thought about the environment, peace and human rights.

It is not unsual for early grade elementary students to create drawings for the holiday and give them as gifts to local kobans, or police stations.
