La Belle Otero born '''Caroline Otero''' (1868-1965) was a famous dancer and courtesan. Otero was born in Barcelona , Spain . Her family was poverty-stricken, and she took to the streets begging. At ten she suffered a rape which left her sterile, and at twelve left home and began working as a singer/dancer in Paris ian cafés. Within years, Otero grew to be the most sought-after woman in all of , Serbia , and Spain as well as Russian Grand Dukes Peter and Nicholas , the Duke Of Westminster and writer Gabriele D'Annunzio . Six men committed suicide after their love affairs with Otero ended. She was famed for her breasts: one of her most famous costumes featured her breasts partially covered with glued-on precious gems, and the twin cupolas of the Hotel Carlton built in 1912 in Cannes were modeled after her breasts. Otero retired after World War I . She had accumulated a massive fortune over the years, about twenty-five million dollars, but she gambled most of it away. She lived out her life in a more and more pronounced state of poverty until she died in 1965 in Nice , France . |
